Minimum wage in Ethiopia 2026: what the law says, and why there is no figure
We found no published national minimum wage in Ethiopia. The law leaves it to a Wage Board, and we found no regulation for one. Here's what that means for you.

We found no published national minimum wage figure for private sector workers in Ethiopia, checked on 2 November 2026. Labour Proclamation 1156/2019 prints no amount. Its Article 55(2) leaves minimum wages to a Wage Board, set up by a regulation of the Council of Ministers, and we found no such regulation on the Ministry of Justice's list. So a figure you see online isn't from an official page we could open, and what binds your employer is your contract and any collective agreement.
We found no regulation for a Wage Board in the Ministry of Justice's law search on 2 November 2026. This page has no wage figures of its own, and the sums below are examples, not a legal minimum.
What the law actually says
Article 55(2) of the Labour Proclamation says a regulation of the Council of Ministers shall set the powers of a Wage Board. The Board would include government, employees and trade unions, with other stakeholders, and it would periodically revise minimum wages based on studies of the economy and the labour market.
So the law creates the idea of a minimum wage, and leaves the number to a body that needs a regulation first. We searched the Ministry of Justice's law site for it on 2 November 2026, for both wage board and minimum wage, and found nothing. The Ministry of Labour and Skills site didn't open from where we checked, so look there again. If a regulation comes out, we'll put the figure on this page.
What about the numbers I see online?
You may see monthly figures in articles and on salary sites. We won't repeat them, because we couldn't trace any to an official page. Some are press reports on government pay, which is a separate thing, and others are old. If you see a figure, ask where it's from: the gazette, the regulation number and the date.
Is government pay the minimum?
No. Government offices pay on the civil service salary scale, which is for public staff. From Meskerem 1, 2018 EC, which is 11 September 2025, Directive 1110/2018 moved federal and regional staff to a revised scale. It doesn't set pay for private employers. Our page on the civil service scale explains what's in that directive and what's missing from the published copy.
What protects your pay without a minimum?
Your contract and the Labour Proclamation do. Your wage is what you agreed. Unless agreed otherwise, wages are paid on working days at the place of work, and if pay day falls on a rest day or a holiday, it moves to the working day before (Article 56). Your employer can't take money from your wages except as the law allows (Article 59). Payment in kind can't go over 30% of the wage paid in cash, and only if you agree (Article 55(1)).
If your wages aren't paid, act quickly. A claim for wages is barred after six months from when it fell due (Article 163(3)). Disputes on pay go to the labour division of the first instance court (Article 139).
How do I judge an offer, then?
Start from what you need in hand, and work back. The Salary to ask for tool, on our Free tools page, turns a net figure into the gross: to keep 5,000 Birr a month, ask for 6,500. To see what an offer leaves you, use the calculator: a wage of 6,000 Birr leaves 4,880 after 700 tax and 420 pension.
Ask for the pay in writing, with gross, basic and any allowances. Only 2 of the 364 adverts on this site gave a pay figure on 1 November 2026, so you'll often need to ask. Applying is free, and nobody should pay for a job, however low the wage.
